 Despite the fall, he was graced by rare Salts of Fortune which gathered at the bottom of the Canyon of Thorns where none dared to tread. 

Unable to escape from the thorns, Kur-Aked could only survive by painstakingly cultivating Barley, which he planted upon the earth imbibed with Salts of Fortune.

Due to the depth of the canyon, and the dryness of clime, only a meagre portion of the Void of Fire and Water could nourish the Barley - and so in desperation, Kur-Aked fed his Barley his blood.
